Coconut Info’s Password Protection Program — KAPU™ version 1.1
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS & SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION

Notice:
• Kapu requires System 7 or later. It is compatible with 32-bit Addressing and screen savers.
• Kapu 1.1 WILL NOT run correctly on a CPU 68000 Mac, i.e. a Classic™, or an SE™, a Plus™, a PowerBook™ 100, or an 128K-512Ke.
• Kapu will run on a Mac with a 68030 or 68020 CPU, ie. the Mac II series; the Classic II, IIsi™ or IIci™, and PowerBooks 140 and 170, etc.
• Kapu ships with the case sensitive password “Kapu”. If you change the password be sure to note what you change it to. Modifier keys are disabled to prevent intrusion. Command-Option key combinations exit Kapu to a choice of either Shut Down or Restart.
• You may need to rebuild the desktop (by holding down the command and option keys upon starting your Macintosh) for proper display of the Kapu icon.
• This is an unregistered, but functioning, demo version. For a full functioning version that includes personalization and a master password read below under "Registration."

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
• Read this documentation carefully.
• Install Kapu on your hard disk by by dragging its icon into the StartUp Items folder located within your System Folder.
• You may also wish to put an alias of Kapu into your Apple Menu Items in your System Folder for immediate access. You could also leave an alias on the desktop.
• When installation is complete, when you restart your system Kapu will startup and ask you for your password.
• Anytime you run Kapu, including an alias, you will also be asked for the password before you can regain access to your Macintosh. This can be handy if you leave your Mac on but unattended in an environment where your Macintosh needs to be protected.
• Using an extension manager such as "Extensions Manager" version >=1.6 by Ricardo Batista you can enable or disable Kapu and still leave it in the Startup Items folder.
Use the Change Password button only if you wish to change your password to something other than your current password. Intially this is "Kapu". Use less than 21 characters.
Kapu is a SIMPLE password protection program. As such it is meant only as a first line of defense. It is easily worked around with a system disk. This is good if you forget your password but not so good against a real malicious prober ready to attack your computer (unless you lock your floppy disk insert and lock all scsi terminations).
In the real world most people just want a way to protect their computer against the casual prober, such as a fellow worker, an uninvited guest, or a child. Kapu will do that well. Few people walk around with a System Disk in their pocket now a days.
Actually your password itself is well protected by encryption. It is not visible by resource or file editing programs and therefore not easily changed without authority.
Just push <Return> or <Enter> on your keyboard after entering a password. Passwords are case sensitive, meaning the password "KAPU" (all uppercase) is not the same as "Kapu" (lowercase). The Help Button must be clicked on with the mouse pointer. Select Help for more information or to change your password.
If you go to change a password REMEMBER you will be asked to enter the current password first (initially Kapu) and press <Return> or <Enter>. At this point you have to click on a Shut Down button if you don’t know the password.
Clicking the Shut Down button will shut down the machine immediately in a safe fashion. This at least gives the people who shouldn't be where they are the ability to shut down the machine correctly. This feature was also designed for those Mac II series computers that are stuffed into a shelf somewhere where the power switch in the back of the unit is not easily available.
Example: an office where maintenance accidentally turned on a Mac IIFX (stuffed in a cabinet) and couldn't figure out how to turn it off safely.
The program ships with the password “Kapu”. Change it to whatever you want, but don’t forget what you change it to. Use something simple like, “Dog” or your birthday, etc. Remember, the password is case sensitive. Passwords must be <=20 characters.
There is a master password you will receive when you register your copy of Kapu. This enables you to use the master password in the event you ever forget your password.
Make an alias of Kapu and put it in your Apple Menu Items folder in your System Folder. This way you can run Kapu every time you leave your computer unattended but on, i.e. going to a meeting, lunch, etc. It works fine with screen savers. Just run Kapu and leave it up. When you return just type in your password and you’re back in business.
Although Kapu will attempt to perform correctly no guarantee to its performance is made by Coconut Info®. Further we assume no liability for any kind of mess you create for yourself using Kapu.
Resource hackers -- don't diddle with Kapu. It is set to catch any unwanted massage and will not work properly, if at all, if it is hacked.
